Modular Healthcare Extensions

Modular Healthcare Extensions

Sandycroft were employed by Stoke-on-Trent City Council to manufacture and install prefabricated extensions as a part of their disabled adaptations strategy.  The modules were manufactured by our team in a factory unit using SIPPS panels, glulam beams etc and were clad in brick slips.  The extensions were then transported to site and craned into position and connected to the services of the existing house with Sandycroft also carrying out the various enabling works required.  The idea of the modules was to enable disabled extensions to be installed quickly with minimal disruption to the occupants of the houses.  Normally the modules containing bedrooms and shower rooms were in use within 48 hours of installation.

Challenges

  • Each module was different which meant that factory manufacture was bespoke
  • Access was often difficult for cranes

Conclusion

The modules were an experiment for the council and ultimately for various reasons the programme was dropped after just 10 installations.  However, the end users were amazed at how quickly they were able to occupy the modules and for the few that were completed they were a complete and novel success.
