COMMERCIAL PROJECTS
Project Narrative
The client is one of the worlds largest manufacturers of foam products for use in anything from furniture to carpet underlay. Having previously worked with Carpenter Ltd, Sandycroft were appointed following a successful tender to carry out the factory expansion works at this facility.
The manufacturing facility is a COMAH registered site due to the chemicals used in the manufacturing processes. This results in specific H&S requirements and additional emergency measures including evacuation procedures.
Manufacturing at the site can be 7 days and therefore the site has high levels of HGV traffic for both goods in and out throughout each week.
As the space on the manufacturing site is reaching it’s maximum the construction team were required to construct both extensions using the minimum amount of space possible.
Client
CARPENTERS LTD
Start Date: August 2019
Completion Date: October 2020
Value: £3,700,000
Project Description
A two phased project to construct two significant factory extensions on at a leading global foam manufacturer to provide 5,800m2 of extra manufacturing and storage space. The extension works took place over two phases to ensure the client could maintain manufacturing throughput for the duration of the project.
Following the completion of a 13m high contiguous piled retaining wall the extension works entailed piled foundations followed by a structural steel portal frame. The extensions were clad in a composite Kingspan system with an insulated single ply Firestone roof to keep the building watertight.
New services installations included gas radiant and air blown heating, new smart LED lighting systems and provision of new sprinkler system.
Internally the existing factory area was re partitioned with new 8m high 1 hour fire rated partitions with internal fire rated shutters and personnel doors.
Challenges
• Ensuring Factory Mutual compliance throughout the build
• Maintaining close H&S co-ordination with the clients’ team to ensure the construction works met the sites COMAH requirements.
• Co-ordination with the clients’ operations and transport teams to ensure the construction works did not impact on the clients’ logistic requirements and vice versa.
• Close client liaison to ensure the clients safety systems such as the sprinkler system and fire alarm system were maintained throughout.
• Installation of a new 200mm diameter sprinkler main beneath the main logistics route for the site and adjacent to a 450mm water main supply pipe feeding the nearby town of Glossop.
• Continued pressures and interruptions to the contract programme, brought about by the Coronavirus epidemic and governmental lockdowns.
Feedback
• Through regular meetings with the Managing Director the feedback from the client and their team was good and appreciation was given to Sandycroft’s collaborative approach to the complexity of the project.
Project Narrative
Won through a competitive tender process for Poole Dick Associates and their client Impulse Embedded, we were pleased to be involved with this project from the design stage to enable us to provide additional value and tailor the project to the Client’s needs.
The works were originally planned to complete in 16 weeks, however with the impact of the international pandemic we completed the works in August 2020, absorbing costs for additional welfare requirements the works were completed on budget.
